Animals sacrificed in Karnataka
Chikkaballapur, June 28, DHNS:
Animal sacrifice has been banned in the State, but the practice continues unabated in the district, with the latest incident near the national highway at Honnenahalli in the taluk on Tuesday.
In the name of religion: A sheep is being readied for sacrifice in front of the ‘Utsavamurthy’ of Gangammadevi at Honnenahalli in Chikkaballapur taluk on Tuesday. DH photoAnimal sacrifice is common in the earlyhours of the day or at night during village fairs and religious programmes.
But at Honnenahalli, goats and sheep were offered by devotees when the ‘utsavamurthy’ of Gangammadevi was brought to the village in the afternoon, in fulfilment of their vows. The blood of the animals, mixed with rice was offered to the deity.
“This is a ritual in practice from times immemorial. Animals are sacrificed for appeasing the divinity as the image is about to enter the village precincts,” said a resident.
A similar practice of sacrificing sheep and hens at the temple of a goddess in Bagepalli Taluk was stopped recently after a hue and cry. But, it is learnt that animals are surreptitiously sacrificed there, now and then.
What the law says
The Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act, 1959 states that sacrificing animals or birds is a punishable offence.
Those indulging in such a practice may be arrested by the police without a warrant.
If the offence is proved, the culprits face imprisonment and are also liable to pay a fine.
