Wahab Doddamane passes away

MANGALORE: Scholar Alkhazi Wahab Doddamane (65), who contributed a lot to Beary literature and the community, died here on Friday morning of kidney failure and heart-related problems, his son Tauheed said.

Doddamane is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Doddamane, a doctor, ran a clinic in the Bunder area for several years. His seminal work in English, “Muslims in Dakshina Kannada”, a study of Muslims up to 1947, was published in 1993, Vaman Nandavara, a scholar and project officer of the Heritage Village at Pilikula, said.

The Beary-Kannada-English dictionary brought out by Doddamane (published in 1997) is one of his most important contributions to Beary literature, Mr. Baddoor said.

A prolific writer, Doddamane published several articles in major newspapers in the region and wrote poems, plays and short stories. Mr. Baddoor said that Doddamane had refused an award from the Beary Sahitya Academy in 2008 and also the following year.
